Yay it’s week two of our blogiversary giveaway! For those of you just tuning in, every week of the month we are having a giveaway to celebrate FWTS turning 1! Last week it was something sweet and this week we’ve got a little savory for ya. We are giving away a $40 gift certificate to Johnny Brenda’s! If you aren’t aware of JB’s, maybe you don’t get to Fishtown much, it is a bar/restaurant/music venue. I might add that it is the best place to see shows in Philly. They also strive to use local ingredients in their food as well as a wonderful list of beers that are from the region.
It isn’t a secret that Johnny Brenda’s is one of my favorite places to eat. I have already expressed my love for their grits and brunch but I have been keeping a secret from you. It is also home of one of my favorite burgers. I’ve kept it quiet because I wanted it all to myself but I can no longer.
It is made up of an 8 oz patty topped with cheddar cheese, grilled onion, tomato, lettuce and pickles. I love the grill marks on the red onion, this is one of my favorite parts of the burger.
My very favorite part of this burger is the bun. I’m always happy to see a non-brioche bun on a bar burger. This sesame seeded bun might look like it could overwhelm the burger but its surprisingly soft and squishy and substantial enough to hold the juicy burger together.
The patty is always well seasoned and comes just as I ordered it, medium rare.
So now that you’ve seen the burger and totally want one, you should leave a comment to enter into the giveaway. Just tell us what you like to eat while sipping on a beer. Of course I enjoy having a beer with a burger.
Make sure to leave your email address so we can get back to you if you win. We will be accepting comments until 5pm Wednesday the 12th.

you sold me on that burger. looks delicious. even at 8:15am. yummo!
fingers crossed!
since i’ve already tried almost everything on the dinner menu, i’ve had a hankering for some brunch. i want to try the whiskey doughnuts so bad every since a little birdie told me about them. can’t wait to wash them down with some PBC refreshment.
Looks like a great burger, would love to try one!
Mmmmm….. this write-up really makes me crave a burger, but I’m trying to save up my burger lust for a lunch trip to Butcher & Singer Wednesday.
i like to eat sweet potato fries w/ sriracha mayo while i beer
I like to eat juicy burgers & onion rings while drinking a nice cold brewski…. mmmm
Fries and beer, a perfect combo. Especially with vinegar. Or hot sauce mixed in with ketchup. mmm.
I like a gooey, ricotta-y, brick-oven pizza with my beer. Yum. I’m also dying to try some fried pickles!
i do like me some barbecue potato chips along with various forms of grilled meat. especially wegmans memphis barbecue kettle chips with a delicioius juicy burger…with my beers i mean.
A fancy pizza from Dock Street is always great with a beer, particularly their four cheese and their margarita pizzas.
Most of all I like to eat pretzels and peanuts with beer, though the oft-mentioned pizza and grilled meats also go well. Really, what doesn’t taste better with beer?
While of course a loaded burger (caramelized onions and blue cheese, naturally) goes VERY well with a beer, the one item I can’t resist without beer is pizza – thin crust, thick cheese, big slices. Even my grandmother, who otherwise never touched alcohol, had to have a beer with her pizza (much to her grandkids’ shock and awe).
Beer + Carrot Cake…think about it….it rocks.
There is nothing like pizza and beer.
burgers, nachos, tacos, fries–oh, goodness there are too many things to mention.
JB’s Octopus Sandwich is the best octopus sandwich I’ve ever had hand’s down. Its incredible and although my fav, with beer maybe not so much. For that fish-n-chips my friends, fish-n-chips.
Burgers with beer are amazing – especially after a long hike, but I also love some spicy mexican food. A burrito smothered in Colorado green chili and a cold fat tire is one of the best treats!
Since it’s summer, I’ll go with fish being GREAT with beer. Fresh off the grill, lemony & tarragon-y. Washed down with a few swigs of summer beer, like Victory Sunrise Weissbeer. Deelish.
Needs a fried egg! Nom nom nom.
I hear JB’s has whiskey donuts, is this true?
Jeff – They have whiskey donuts during brunch on the weekend, they are awesome.
i wanna try those whiskey donuts
not to keep on and on about these whiskey doughnuts, but, wkend brunch at johnny brendas is looking up. otherwise, falafel!
Hands down, hot wings and a beer. Now if I could just find the perfect wings in Philly!!!
I love fried clams with a good beer! Also my favorite….philly soft pretzel!
Mmmm. Props to whoever brought up burritos and beer. Nom nom nom. But I have to go with my personal favorite…a slab of ribs. The only thing more satisfying than gnawing those bones clean of any flesh is celebrating my accomplishment with one or more cold cold beers. Usually in the privacy of my own home, planted in front of a cheesy TV marathon…
Hmmm…beer. I like to drink a super cold beer whilst eating nothing more than the dank air of a new jersey summer.
I like to separate my actual eating and drinking experiences…I don’t like them to have to fight for my attention.
If I had to choose though, I’ve been really into turkey burgers lately. But that’s mainly because I stopped having the heart to eat cows. Turkeys, eh, I can handle it.
Honestly I enjoy eating ANYTHING while drinking a beer. If I have to pick something I think it would be hot wings and pizza.
Those whiskey donuts sound scrumptious!
How do you feel about salmon burgers? Turkey? Portabello with caramelized onions and swiss cheese?
Seriously, you are making me want to eat a big old cow on a bun. Looks delicious.
PS. I just took another look at that burger. The grilled onion is really calling my name.
Beer goes with just about any food, even breakfast, but I think the best pairing is with hot wings. Currently my in town favorites are the Hot & Honey wings at the New Deck, but Local 44 has some kicking wings as well.
love to drink beer while eating the chicken nachos at royal tavern!
