This post is brought to you by insomnia.
Seeing as my question about “suicides” at the soda fountain was a success, and I use that term loosely only because I think it got the most comments on FWTS without offering a giveaway, I’m going to ask you to offer your thoughts on this heated topic. OK let me clarify that the only one heated up about this topic is me.
Movie theater red licorice:
Red Vines are awesome. I will stand by this till the day I die. They are the superior movie theater licorice. They have a sweet cherry flavor and a soft and chewy texture that I really enjoy. I grew up eating these sweet twisty treats at movie theaters all over California. It was my very favorite thing. I enjoyed biting off both ends of the licorice and using it as a straw. I was up for a rude awakening when I moved to the east coast for college and found that this wasn’t a standard at the movie theater concession stands on this side of the country. Instead there were Twizzler’s. I wish you could see my face when I think of Twizzler’s. Oh wait you can.
I’ve clearly just figured out that my laptop can take pictures of myself, I apologize in advance for the overuse of this. Too late.
So back to Twizzler’s. I think they are gross. They smell weird and taste like wax. That’s all I really have to say about that.
I’ve made my preference perfectly clear. Which do you prefer? Leave a comment to let me know and again include where you grew up. I think that geographic location will make a big difference of opinion.
You can blame insomnia for the ridiculous post.

You know my answer to this. Red Vines!!!!!! Especially as a straw…with hot chocolate. YUM!
I can’t say I like one over the other because I’ve only ever had Twizzlers. If I ever get to try Red Vines, I’ll let you know what I think.
Maybe it’s a coastal differences thing, but I grew up with Twizzlers, and I love Twizzlers and consider them the consummate movie theater snack. I’ve tried Red Vines, and I can’t say that I’m fond of them, but it may just be because they don’t taste like Twizzlers, if that makes any sense.
Okay, that probably doesn’t make any sense.
Peth, I think you make great sense. I feel the same way about Red Vines, I don’t like Twizzler’s because they don’t taste like Red Vines.
The first four ingredients of Twizzlers, according to the authority on these matters, “WikiAnswers”, are “Corn Syrup , Flour , Sugar , Cornstarch “.. Twizzlers taste like Flour and Cornstarch with a dash of sugars and food colorings.. Red Vines’ third ingredient is “Citric Acid” and fourth is “Artificial Flavoring”.. We love Red Vines because they taste like candy, not like cornstarch..
I grew up in the Allentown, PA, area & didn’t have Red Vines till I moved to Chicago about a decade ago. Red Vines are definitely the superior candy – I liked Twizzlers as a kid, but the only Twizzlers I eat anymore are the Nibs, the little solid cherry blocks, which I hardly ever see anywhere (the similar but inferior Bites are a lot more common). I just moved to Philadelphia this month – are Red Vines hard to find out here? That will suck.
Also, I didn’t comment on your “suicide” post, but I definitely remember hearing that term growing up in eastern PA. I’m not sure how common it was, though.
Twizzlers are sort of oily but I like them. I associate them with watching movies.
When I was a little kid in MN, the other red licorice was more common, but now it only seems to be available in special candy stores. I prefer black licorice only if it has that real, weird licorice plant flavor.
Nibs are my favorite.
In Texas, I grew up using Twizzlers primarily as a vehicle for sipping cans of Dr Pepper. I moved to Philly, tried Red Vines, and OMG they taste so much better. I never really liked Twizzlers anyway.

Red Vines for the win! Never could figure out how two ostensibly similar things could be sooooo different. And yet another thing I didn’t realize was coastal. I’m from California and while I’ve always been aware of Twizzlers, they were always, you know, bastard stepchildren.
thank you for posting this!! as a californian living in philly i often have trouble winning this debate. twizzlers are sickening! and you cannot make a straw for your giant movie theater soda out of a twizzler, only a red vine!!
