Smelts and snow

December 23rd, 2009 · 1 Comment · NoLibs, Standard Tap

Sounds like an odd combination right? Also not necessarily something that this blog has ever covered. My hate for snow is no secret. I will blame being born in Southern California. It’s just not in my blood.

So it snowed…a lot…this weekend in Philly and I wanted to share a gem that I have recently been enjoying this winter time. I have been living in the Fishtown/Northern Liberties area for about 5 years and it has taken me this long to discover the wonders of the upstairs bar at Standard Tap. It’s got a fireplace. That is really all you need to know. Add the coziness of the small space along with the many windows that look out to 2nd st. and you have the perfect location to wait out a blizzard. That’s just what I did this weekend.

I braved the snow with Meg on Saturday to take some pictures of the neighborhood in the snow. I pretty much failed at this but did take pictures of our snack/drink break at Standard Tap.

Smelts from Standard Tap

The smelts at Standard Tap are one of my favorite bar snacks. They are lightly fried and seasoned. Add a little lemon juice and a dip in the peppery cream sauce and you’re set.

Side of beautiful bacon from Standard Tap

It was brunch time while we were at Standard Tap so the smell of bacon was overwhelming. I told Meg of my desire for some bacon and she suggested we order a side of bacon. Just because. Just because we wanted some bacon. Genius. My friends are smart. If this picture is any indication, the bacon was very good. Slightly crispy but still pliant, just the way I like it.

All of this too

This is a picture of the sidewalk I shoveled on Sunday. Yes me. I did it. All by myself. I have the backache to prove it. Probably not the best shoveling job ever but it was my first time. Not bad for a California girl.
