National Hamburger Month giveaway #1 – South Philly Taproom

May 3rd, 2010 · 35 Comments · National Burger Month, South Philly Taproom, burger, giveaways, south philly

Happy National Hamburger Month! May is shaping up to be the best month of the year. I will be spending a lot of this month in California and so I will be celebrating this month with  my favorite West coast burgers. While I am away I will be doing weekly giveaways from my favorite burger joints in Philly. Isn’t that nice of me?

We get this week started of with a $25 gift certificate from South Philly Taproom. You might remember SPTR from this Burger Club report card. It got a solid A and beat Pub and Kitchen for top burger. I believe it still might hold that title, though I have two report cards I am behind on. Some of the highlights of this burger were the bun, juicy 100% local and grass fed patty, and beautifully constructed. I checked back in with the SPTR burger last week and they have changed up the burger a bit but it is still just as tasty.

SPTR burger

Description from their menu: 100% Local grass-fed beef bacon cheeseburger with beer braised bacon, Lancaster smoked cheddar, shaved red onion, sly fox beer mustard. Please excuse the iPhone quality picture, it’s all I had with me. This is definitely a burger for mustard lovers.  Again it comes with their fantastic fries and pickled veggies. Also the bun still rocks!

So if you would like a chance to win the $25 gift certificate please leave a comment below and tell me what your favorite burger condiments are. I am of course a big fan of thousand island dressing or a special sauce on my burger. Make sure to include your email address so I can contact you if you win. I will close comments on Wednesday at noon. The winner will be announced on Friday, because I will be traveling to LA on Thursday! You didn’t need to know that but I’m excited.

Happy burgering!

This is the only time I didn’t order a burger during BCP and probably one of my biggest regrets. Everyone looked so happy with their burgers and I ordered…the grilled cheese. Because clearly, I do not know a good thing when I see it.

  • Livia

I like cheese and onions (raw or grilled)… and mayonnaise for the joyous greasy shame of it.

And I’ve never been to South Philly Tap Room.

Have the maximum amount of fun on the west coast. ~g~

South Philly Taproom is such a good watering hole that I didn’t immediately associate it with a stellar burger.

I’m personally a huge fan of raw
jalapeño peppers on my burger. I love the heat!

i finally checked out SPTR yesterday– so good! as for favorite burger condiments, i second the thousand island dressing nod. and ketchup would probably be my least favorite burger condiment.

Favorite burger condiments, hmmm… This is a tough call because they are ALL so good. I would have to say that a single burger combination is superior when it, first of all, is a gorgonzola-stuffed burger and involves an additional exterior layer of gorgonzola, topped with well caramelized onions, a dollop of freshly pureed fig spread and finished with a home-made balsamic mayo. Served on a lightly toasted brioche bun, this will be my signature dish when I open my homestyle diner. If I ever get around to it.

  • Jen

I love homemade ketchup with a touch of spiciness!! I am getting soo hungry just thinking about how tasty SPTR burgers are…

  • Nicole R

Love SPTR, and it is one of my locals. Favorite burger toppings are ANYTHING pickled. Of course traditional pickles but also pickled tomatoes and even giardenera! I’m also a big fan of classic sauteed mushrooms and onions. Yum…..

  • Claire

A good old traditional ketchup for me. Thousand island dressing is good too. Although, a good burger (juicy, medium rare, oozing) with good cheese rarely needs additional condiments…

  • Kristin

FAve toppings include, any kinda special sauce, red onion, deli pickle sliced thin, and good old fashioned iceberg.

  • Aubre

As much as I love mustard in all shapes and sizes, I like to save this condiment for hot dogs. On my burgers I love me some full fat, mayo one one bun and then ketchup on the other bun. I really like when places make their own ketchup too. These burger pictures are making my mouth water :)

  • Jenny

Caramelized onions always take a burger up a notch for me. If it’s a good juicy burger I skip sauce, but otherwise will use some ketchup.

If you can pass on a burger one night, SPTR has my favorite mac and cheese in Philly.

  • Bevin

I like caramelized onions on my burger. A rare treat. Have fun in LA!

  • ThadS

Sriracha red onion rings, homemade gorgonzola mayo, lettuce, and tomato. Game, set, and match!

  • Scott

Bacon! Also, fried eggs, pickles, bbq sauce, ranch dressing, onion rings, blue cheese, and ham :)

  • Kathleen

Love sautéed mushrooms with a really good cheese!

  • Elizabeth

Caramelized onions, pickles, and special sauce!

  • Amy

Sauteed Onions, a good cheese (not roquefort of blue) , bacon and BBQ sauce for dipping!

  • Ann

Cheddar cheese, dijon mustard, and tomato is my test burger. Pickles too, if they’re dill. The dijon is non-negotiable.

  • Mike H

With all of the hype around burgers recently, a plain cheeseburger with chevre is hard to beat

In honor of NBM, I’m commenting on fwts and eating a Double Double AT THE SAME TIME. Amazing.

  • BurgerBaroness

    You all are awesome!

@Josh, “In honor of NBM, I’m commenting on fwts and eating a Double Double AT THE SAME TIME. Amazing” THAT’S HOW IT’S DONE SON! I’m also terribly jealous of you, even though I will be biting into one of those beauties on Thursday.

  • lyndsey

I looooove mustard, carmelized onions, and mushrooms. YUM.

  • polianarchy

I don’t eat burgers. If I did, my favorite condiment would be salsa, because it’s my favorite condiment on damn near everything.

National Hamburger Month — the best time of the year!!

I had the BEST burger of my life, no joke, last week and it was plopped with a hefty amount of house-made bacon jam and bourbon barbecue sauce = pure bliss. Also, add some aged cheddar or a delicate blue cheese to the mix, and this girl will always be happy!

  • kailey

i looove leeks and bleu cheese!

  • Megan

mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles & red onion

  • Daniel

I love dijon mustard and caramelized onions!

  • kissyfur

Never been to SPTR, but I’d love to have an excuse to try it! Favorite burger is medium rare with lettuce, tomato, raw onion, catsup and a runny egg.

  • Bruno Gridley

Thousand island dressing with a little horseradish in it.

  • Meg

That was the best burger! Nom.

I have to stand by lettuce, tomato, and sliced dill pickles. Mustard+mayo. I’m a traditionalist.

  • J

As long as there’s cheese, I’m happy.

  • Denise

If I know it’s a properly seasoned, properly cooked patty, then I’ve been known to go naked – no cheese, no “special” sauce, no potato chips for crunch . . . no frills, just burger, bun and maybe some lettuce and tomato for good health.
