Twitter as inspiration: hoisin pork bun

February 10th, 2011 · 2 Comments · The Kitchn, Twitter, recipe

This post just goes to show you that Twitter is good for something. When @danieldelaney posted this twitcipe, I was obsessed. It looked and sounded amazing. I also had just the hoisin pork recipe to use.

What you’ll need:

Hoisin pork – I used this recipe from The Kitchn. You old time FWTS readers might remember me using it before.

Kewpie mayo

Bao buns

My version

It was super easy to make. You can pick up everything at your local Asian market. The hardest part was waiting for the pork to cook because I wanted to eat it so badly. Once the pork was finished, I steamed the buns and then assembled this beauty. I even had some rice sitting around, you know just hanging out on the couch, and I put all the ingredients on rice instead of a bun and that was really good too. Thanks Twitter and Dan!

UGH. As much I want bao bun to be the next “burger”, the usage of kewpie (oo, Japanese mayo SOO cool) AND sriracha (ooo, “Vietnamese” hot sauce mass produced in America) is a blatant hipster food move, turning a tradition Taiwanese food item into a nondescript Momofuk-u-wannabe.

Try some Indonesian sambal instead? It goes about 10x better with pork than kewpie. Or better yet, find a bottle of Taiwanese plum sauce and go nuts.
