Or Shank’s Original, as it’s also known, is one of the best sandwich places i’ve ever been to. and i’m originally from chicago, arguably the land of the most awesome sandwiches. (i expect some bitter comments for that one). those who don’t live in bella vista or south philly may not really know about this hideaway, and i must admit that i lived around the corner for two years and just thought it was abandoned. oops! well, it is in a house. it’s hard to tell! earle and i finally managed time to go last weekend, and it was definitely worth the wait. i imagined the interior as a hole-in-the-wall take out joint, but there’s actually a counter and about 5-6 tables that seat about 4 people each. two hard-working women manned the counter and a grill right behind it; you could tell their days were rough but they still smiled and chatted with customers. for $16 earle and i each got a large sandwich – he ordered the roast beef and i had a chicken cutlet w/gravy and provolone (they were out of roast pork), along with free pickle salad and long hots. apparently the restaurant is relocating but they’re not dishing on the new location yet. my advice: get there before april 30 to check out the original if you haven’t done so already. you might see me there, ordering a roast pork sandwich.

Wow, I walked by that place a thousand times when my girlfriend lived in the neighborhood but never went inside. Never suspected they were so great, but was always charmed by the RC Cola sign.
Damn the secret is out! Shanks is my favorite restaurant of all time. I would take a meal at Shanks any day over any high end restaurant. Shanks is delicious, unpretentious and about as Philadelphia as you can get. Now that the secret’s out I guess I can share a few things:
1. Try the giambot which is a giant omelet made only during certain hours I think they won’t make it between 12-2 because of how busy they get.
2. They make THE BEST hoagies in the city, the meats are cut to order.
3. They make the best soups in the city.
Enjoy and don’t tell too many people
seriously, i always noticed this sign but thought it had closed up shop like 20 years ago.
