She said, She said: Honest Tom’s

April 30th, 2009 · 1 Comment · University City, burgerbaroness, cheap eats, food truck, jaimeshake, philly, work lunch

This is the first post in a new series entitled “She said, She said” where Jess and Jaime blog about their joint food (ad)ventures.

Jess:

I think I have a thing for their sign because I can never stop by Honest Tom’s and not take a picture of it. It’s a pretty great sign. Am I right?

It’s been awhile since I first wrote about Honest Tom’s during their first week of opening. Since then they have changed up their menu and gotten a bunch of press. Also Jaime hadn’t made it over there yet so we stopped by today to see what the taco brother’s (that’s what I’m calling them) were up to.

As for menu changes, they are still offering their delightful breakfast tacos but you can only get them  for…wait for it… breakfast. At lunch they switch to chicken and a veggie option. Today they had sweet potato tacos!

Perfectly cooked sweet potatoes were smothered in the super fresh and tasty guac and salsa that Honest Tom’s has become known for.  I got two because I was really hungry today but one will also make for a satisfying snack. For $2 it is a total steal. I have had the chicken previously and loved it as well.

Jaime:

Jess has pretty much hit everything I want to say, except, holy bananas foster, check out the cutie in the truck.  I probably shouldn’t be talking about a college kid, but seriously.  The brothers that work this joint are…workin’ it.  And lookin’ good while doing it.  Anyway, I should probably talk about the food?  I had never been, and had $5.50 in cash to my name until tomorrow and needed a cheap option that wasn’t Magic Carpet (I’ve been eating there way too much lately).  Luckily, their chicken tacos cost $3.50 and the sweet potato only $2.  Seriously.  I got one of both, and hurried back to my office to scarf them down.

First, and most importantly, all the ingredients are ultra fresh and it totally comes across.  I swear the tortillas are handmade, but I can’t imagine two surfer-looking dudes do that themselves.  The tomatoes, onions, guac = perfection.  A sprinkling of cheddar and a dash of srichacha and you have a cheap, filling, great tasting lunch.  The grilled chicken had a bit of char which I love and were in nice cubes, but honestly, I loved the sweet potato taco more.  All of the ingredients melded together so well – I wish I had ordered two of those instead.  Next up:  need to try their breakfast taco and coffee.  Hopefully I can convince my morning walking companion to stop there with me tomorrow to grab some morning grub.  Thanks Jess for going with me there today!
